ScribeWright

Write, style, and validate EPUB books on your PC, with Word and PDF export.

ScribeWright is a book-writing app for Windows that produces finished EPUB files: the format bookstores and e-readers expect. You write in a clean visual editor, keep your whole book in one file, and export a standards-checked EPUB when you are ready. There is no account, no subscription, and nothing leaves your PC.

One File, Whole Book

A ScribeWright book is a single .swj file: chapters, metadata, cover, images, fonts, styles, and the book’s own dictionary. Copy the file and you have copied the book. Autosave keeps a running copy beside it, and unsaved work is offered back to you after a crash.

Write, Don’t Format

The visual editor shows your chapter exactly as readers will see it, using the book’s real stylesheet and fonts. Headings, emphasis, quotes, scene breaks, lists, and images are a click or a shortcut away. A Code pane beside it shows the chapter’s XHTML for the moments you want to see under the hood, and a per-chapter Notes pane keeps your working notes next to the text without ever going into the book.

Styles You Can See

Typography presets get you started; the Style Editor changes fonts, sizes, spacing, indents, and chapter-heading looks with a live preview. Embedded fonts are packaged with the book, obfuscated the way the EPUB standard describes.

Fiction and Non-fiction

Choose the kind of book once. Fiction gets scene breaks and manuscript conventions. Non-fiction gets parts, front and back matter, a generated table of contents, headings with stable links, nested lists, code blocks, numbered figures and tables, callouts, footnotes that number themselves, and cross-references whose text follows their target. Numbers and references are worked out when you export, so moving a chapter never leaves a stale one behind.

Layout Review

Press F9 and ScribeWright reads the book against a set of formatting rules for its kind: straight quotes, double spaces, empty paragraphs, missing scene-break markup, heading levels out of order, tables without a header row, references that point at nothing, and more. Each finding jumps to the spot; many fix themselves in one click.

Spelling, in Your Language

Spell checking uses the Windows spelling engine and the language packs already on your PC, plus a private dictionary for each book.

Import Your Manuscript

Bring in a Word document and get chapters split on Heading 1, with emphasis, headings, quotes, lists, tables, captions, pictures, footnotes, and code carried over. Or open an existing EPUB to keep working on it.

Export for Every Reader

EPUB 3 for stores and e-readers, a Word document for editors and beta readers, a PDF for print (including the trim sizes Amazon KDP and IngramSpark use), and a plain manuscript printout. Before you ship, validate with EPUBCheck, the same checker the stores use, built in: no install, no Java, no upload.

Keep Track

Word counts per chapter and for the book, daily writing goals with a streak, Find & Replace across the book, and a Recent Books screen with covers.

Made for Windows

Light and dark themes that follow Windows, a ribbon that collapses when you want to focus, keyboard shortcuts for everything, and Help built in (F1) so you never need to be online to look something up. The same Help is online, topic by topic.
