ScribeWright Privacy Policy
Effective 2026-09-26. Applies to ScribeWright 1.1.0 and later, from the Microsoft Store and from the direct download.
ScribeWright is a book-writing app that runs entirely on your PC. This policy is short because the app does not collect anything.
What ScribeWright Does Not Do
- No account. There is nothing to sign up for or sign in to.
- No network. The app makes no connections of its own: no telemetry, no usage statistics, no crash reports, no update checks, no licence checks. It does not need an internet connection to run.
- No personal data collected. The app does not collect, store or send your name, email address, location, device identifiers or anything else about you.
- No advertising, no tracking, no third-party analytics.
Files
ScribeWright reads and writes only the files you choose:
- Books (
.swj), imports (.docx,.epub) and exports (.epub,.docx,.pdf) are read from and written to the locations you pick in the Open, Save, Import and Export dialogs. An autosave copy is kept beside each book. - Its own settings, the list of recent books with their cover thumbnails, a private spelling dictionary, a rolling seven-day log of app events (used only if you report a problem), and emergency copies of open books written when the app crashes. These stay in your Windows user profile, under
%LocalAppData%\ScribeWright. For the Microsoft Store version Windows may instead keep them inside the app’s own data folder (%LocalAppData%\Packages\ScribeWright.ScribeWright_rd9xx5byyadhp\LocalCache\Local\ScribeWright), which is removed when the app is uninstalled. Your books are never touched by an uninstall.
The log records events such as start-up, opening and saving books, and errors, with file paths. It never leaves your PC unless you send it to us yourself.
Components on Your PC That ScribeWright Uses
- Windows spelling. Spell checking uses the Windows Spellchecking API and the language packs installed on your PC. Words you add go to a dictionary inside the book file or to your private dictionary; nothing is sent anywhere.
- Microsoft Edge WebView2. The editor and previews are drawn by the WebView2 runtime that ships with Windows. ScribeWright only ever shows its own pages, served from inside the app; it never loads a web page. If the runtime is missing, the app offers to open Microsoft’s download page in your browser, and that is the only outward link in the app. WebView2’s own data folder lives in the app data folder above.
- EPUBCheck. Validation runs inside the app process (no Java, no download, no upload of your book).
- Links in Help and About open in your default browser only when you click them.
Children
ScribeWright collects no data from anyone, of any age.
Changes
If a future version changes any of the above (for example an optional check for updates), this policy and the version number at the top will change with it, and the change will be described in the release notes.
