Importing
From Word (.docx)
File ▸ Import Word Document… turns a Word manuscript into a new book. Chapters split on Heading 1 paragraphs (Word’s Title style also counts); each Heading 1’s text becomes a chapter title. Anything before the first Heading 1 lands in a "Front Matter" chapter. The document title from Word’s file properties becomes the book title when present.
What carries over:
- Bold and italic (mapped to proper emphasis, merged cleanly across runs), and manual line breaks
- Heading 2 / Heading 3 → section headings (Heading 4 and deeper become Heading 3; the summary says how many)
- Quote / Intense Quote styles → block quotes
- Lists: bulleted and numbered, nesting up to three levels
- Tables: with a header row when Word marks one (a repeating header, or the first-row look most tables have); merged cells that span rows are left empty and noted
- Captions: a paragraph in Word’s Caption style becomes the caption of the table before or after it, or of the picture before it; Word’s own "Table 3:" or "Figure 2:" is dropped, because numbers are added at export
- Pictures: into the Images gallery, once per picture, with the description Word stored; a picture with a caption becomes a figure. Formats readers cannot show (EMF, WMF) are left out and listed.
- Footnotes and endnotes: the reference stays in the text and the note goes to the end of its chapter, numbered through the book
- Code: paragraphs in a Code style (Word’s HTML Code, or your own) or set entirely in a monospace font become code blocks
What doesn’t:
- Word’s table of contents: left out on purpose; Insert ▸ Table of Contents makes one that follows the book
- Text boxes, comments, tracked changes, and fields other than the table of contents (their last result text is kept)
The import summary lists what was mapped and, when something was left behind, what and how many.
From EPUB
File ▸ Open EPUB… opens an existing EPUB as a project, which is useful for revising a book you only have in published form. Complex publisher markup may arrive imperfectly; check the result with Validate with EPUBCheck (F5) before republishing.
