Backups & Recovery

Losing a manuscript is the one unforgivable failure, so protection is layered. Here’s each layer and where its files live.

While You Write

The title bar shows an asterisk (*) when the book has unsaved changes, and closing with changes always asks: Save / Don’t Save / Cancel. Nothing is discarded silently.

A brand-new book you haven’t saved yet is autosaved in the background. If the app (or the PC) dies before your first Ctrl+S, the next launch offers to recover it.

Every Time You Save

Saves are atomic: the new version is written beside the old and swapped in only when complete; a crash or power cut mid-save can’t leave a half-written project. The previous version is kept next to your file as .swj.bak. Saved something you regret? Close without saving again, and rename the .bak (e.g. MyBook.swj.bak → MyBook.swj).

If the App Crashes

An unexpected crash triggers an emergency save of every open book to the recovery folder, and the next launch offers those copies back.

Where the Safety Net Lives

Everything is under %LocalAppData%\ScribeWright (paste that into File Explorer’s address bar):

  • unsaved\: autosaves of never-saved books
  • recovery\: emergency copies written during a crash
  • logs\: the last 7 days of activity logs (useful if you ever need to report a problem)
  • dictionary.txt: My Dictionary
