Exporting
All exports live under File ▸ Export. Each builds the whole book from the current state of the project: chapters in order, your styles, and your metadata.
EPUB (F12)
The main event: a standards-conforming EPUB 3 ready for stores and readers. It includes your cover, fonts (with W3C obfuscation if enabled in Book Setup ▸ Fonts), images, the navigation built from your chapter titles, and the stylesheet composed from the Style Editor settings.
The results window lists each finding with a severity icon (red error, amber warning, blue note), the message, EPUBCheck’s code, where it is and the line and column in the chapter’s source; Go To (double-click or Enter) lands the caret there in the Code pane, and Copy raw output keeps the validator’s full report. Auto-Fix All Chapters (F8) clears the mechanical ones. Like the other review windows, it remembers its size.
In a non-fiction book the EPUB carries the footnotes as pop-ups (readers that cannot show a pop-up jump to the note and back), the cross-references as links to their targets, and a Notes chapter when the book collects its notes at the end. See Non-fiction Books.
Word Document (Ctrl+Shift+E)
A .docx of the manuscript (cover page, chapters, and formatting) for the
people in your life who live in Word: editors, beta readers, agents.
Their comments come back in a file you can read anywhere; bring accepted
changes into ScribeWright yourself (the project remains the source of
truth). A non-fiction book’s footnotes become real Word footnotes (or
endnotes, when the book collects notes at the end), its cross-references
REF fields Word refreshes with the rest, its tables Word tables and its
captions Word captions, so References ▸ Insert Table of Figures works.
PDF (Ctrl+Shift+P)
A paginated PDF of the book, for proofreading on paper, sharing a read-only copy, or uploading as a paperback interior. For a quick hard copy of a single chapter, the Print command is faster. A non-fiction book’s footnotes are listed at the end of each chapter (or in the Notes chapter), numbered and linked from the text, and its cross-references are links that add on page 57 unless Book Setup ▸ Non-fiction turns the page numbers off.

Export asks for the page first, and the book remembers the answer:
- Page size: US Letter, A4, A5, the trim sizes Amazon KDP and IngramSpark print (5 × 8, 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9 and the rest), or a custom width and height in inches. Picking a size also sets sensible margins for it (1 in on office paper, 0.75 in on a trim); adjust them after.
- Margins: top, bottom, left, and right, in inches. The same left and right margin goes on every page, so for a paperback set both to at least the inside (gutter) margin your printer requires. KDP’s minimums grow with the page count: 0.375 in up to 150 pages, 0.5 in to 300, 0.625 in to 500, 0.75 in to 700, 0.875 in beyond, with 0.25 in outside.
- Include the cover as the first page: on for a proof or a copy to read; off for a KDP or IngramSpark interior, which they reject if the cover is repeated inside (the cover is uploaded as its own file).
The dialog shows the text area the page and margins leave and refuses a combination that leaves fewer than two inches for the text.
What Export Never Does
Exports are one-way snapshots: editing the EPUB, DOCX, or PDF elsewhere
does not change your project. The .swj file is the manuscript; exports
are performances of it.
