Printing

File ▸ Print… (Ctrl+P) prints the chapter you’re on, or the whole book, as a plain manuscript: black text on white paper in one font of your choosing. The book’s stylesheet is not involved at all, so nothing from an imported EPUB, a custom class or a reader tint can reach the page. Bold, italic and underline in the prose are kept; headings, scene breaks, quotations and lists keep their shape.

The Print Window

The preview shows the pages exactly as the printer will lay them out. Across the top:

  • Print: this chapter, or the whole book (each chapter starts on a new page, with its title as a heading when the text has none).
  • Font and size: any installed font, 9 to 18 points; Times New Roman 12 by default (the same choices as Preferences ▸ Printing).
  • Spacing: single, 1.5 lines, or double (double-spaced is the submission-manuscript convention).
  • Header: a running line with the author and book title at the top of every page; Page numbers on the right of it.
  • Page Setup…: paper size, orientation, and margins (1 inch all round by default).
  • Page controls: first, previous, next, and last page, and a box showing where you are ("7 of 312"): type a page number there and press Enter to jump to it.
  • Zoom: Fit page shows a whole page, Fit width fills the window’s width so the text is readable and you scroll down through the page, and 75 %, 100 % and 150 % are fixed sizes.
  • Two pages side by side: the last button on the bar toggles between one page and a two-page spread; paging moves two pages at a time.

These choices, zoom and layout included, are remembered between sessions. At the bottom, Print… opens the standard Windows printer dialog and sends the job; Close (or Esc) puts the window away.

A whole-book preview of a long manuscript takes a moment to lay out. The window stays usable while it works: the footer counts up ("Preparing page 42…") and the Print button waits until the pages are in. Change a setting mid-way and the preview starts over with the new one; closing the window stops it.

Printing to a File

Pick Microsoft Print to PDF in the printer dialog to get a PDF of the manuscript. For a PDF of the book as styled (fonts, classes, the look of the EPUB), use File ▸ Export ▸ PDF… (Ctrl+Shift+P) instead.

If Nothing Previews

The window needs at least one printer installed, even a virtual one such as Microsoft Print to PDF; without one it says so and offers nothing to print.
